According to the spring tradition of “Marti” or “Martia,” adults and children wear a small bracelet made of red and white thread from March 1st till the 31st. The tradition dates back to ancient Greece and is held throughout the Balkans.
Nowadays, the custom is still carried on with the red and white threaded bracelet and it is worn throughout the whole month of March. The bracelet is threaded on the last day of February.

The bracelet was said to protect from diseases and the rays of the sun, which are supposed to be very strong during March. Back in the days, dark skin signified impurity, especially for girls, for whom the beauty standards dictated that skin should be pale and the cheeks rosy.
In several regions in Greece, at the end of the month, the bracelet is placed on rose buses after they’ve seen the first swallow, so it can pick it up and build its nest.

Μάρτης, βραχιόλι με μάτι κόκκινο και άσπρο!!!
Ο μάρτης έχει τις ρίζες του στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα, και συγκεκριμένα στα Ελευσίνια Μυστήρια.
Σύμφωνα με το έθιμο, από την 1η ως τις 31 του Μάρτη, τα παιδιά φορούν στον καρπό του χεριού τους ένα βραχιολάκι, φτιαγμένο από στριμμένη άσπρη και κόκκινη κλωστή, τον «Μάρτη» ή «Μαρτιά».
Το βραχιολάκι αυτό, σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, το φοράνε κυρίως τα παιδιά για να μην «καούν» και να προστατευτούν από τον ανοιξιάτικο ήλιο. Μέχρι και πρόσφατα, πριν κάποιες δεκαετίες οι όμορφες γυναίκες ήταν αυτές που δεν μαύριζαν από τον ήλιο (μαύριζαν αυτές που έκαναν δουλειά έξω, οι αγρότισσες που ήταν πιο φτωχές). Έτσι ο ήλιος του Μαρτίου ήταν «ύπουλος» και ο μάρτης ήταν η υπενθύμιση! Το βγάζουν στο τέλος του μήνα, ή το αφήνουν πάνω στις τριανταφυλλιές όταν δουν το πρώτο χελιδόνι, για να τον πάρουν τα πουλιά και να χτίσουν τη φωλιά τους.
